Around the month of February, schools around the world started to shut down since the start of the coronavirus pandemic. Most countries were in unison about the decision to stop gathering kids in a communal space, however, many were not sure about the impacts towards the education system.

As soon as the COVID-19 took place, it was obvious that closing schools was the right action, however, shutting education institutions is not something any country could afford to do on a prolonged basis. Courses eventually continued to be given through online conference calls and many education institutions are depending on the use of education software.

The recent predicament with the outbreak of the coronavirus has created nothing short of an earthquake in the business landscape worldwide. One major aspect of this shockwave was the sudden urgent need to keep the flow of work going while still adhering to the safety measures necessary to counter the spread of the pandemic. Schools and higher education have gone through many changes throughout the years. Now change is even more prominent with a new change of lifestyle. More than ever now, I think it is safe to say that the Cloud is something highly needed in the midst of the corona outbreak. COVID-19 or not, there’s no point in denying that digitalization is the future. We all live in a world where technology is slowly becoming our new overlords, and everyday activities tend to involve technology these days. The education sector is one great example of this.

Bureaucrats have long been criticized for not doing enough with the education system. From lack of equality to a bureaucratic system, there are tons to criticize about the way things are done. In the US, critics of public education argue that schools completely run on bureaucracy with many public education being tied to so many stakeholders, ergo, insufficiently distribute education to all students. Even one of the countries with some of the best education systems, such as Finland, is being criticised.

Distance learning efforts in the GCC education sector

The global coronavirus outbreak and the shift towards social distancing have posed very serious challenges on several levels. These challenges have sent the education sector across the globe racing to find solutions to cope with the urgent need for the distance learning alternative. In the UAE, for instance, plans to switch to distance learning were carried out from as early as the first week of March. It began with a swift closure of schools and universities which was issued across the country, then studies continued remotely. Following that, the possibility of extending the distance learning period hung in the air until it was confirmed on the 30th of March that it will continue until June.

How does the Student Information System (SIS) facilitate the education process?

Education, like all other sectors, has been influenced greatly by the emergence and advancement of information technology. And this has not been the case through the past 10 or so years only. In fact, this influence goes way further back than that.

One such old example of this influence was in 1988 when Automate The Schools (ATS), a K-12 student information system, was implemented across all of New York City’s public schools. It has been in use ever since. The system was written using the Computer Corporation of America’s (CCA) Model 204 database management software, and it facilitated the administration of over 1 million students in NYC’s public schools.
